These rights include the right to life, liberty, and security of person; the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; the right to work, education, and healthcare; the right to participate in government and democracy; and the right to cultural and intellectual property.

Despite the existence of these international laws and policies, human rights violations are still rampant in many parts of the world. Millions of people continue to suffer from discrimination, marginalization, and violence because of their race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. Governments that refuse to recognize and protect human rights serve as a major obstacle to advancing global justice.
